A recently published series of scientific papers is calling for action to strengthen research and harmonize methodologies for the measurement and assessment of tire wear emissions.
The State of Knowledge: Tire Wear Emissions During the Use Phase series reviews over 850 peer-reviewed scientific publications from the past 40 years and states that it sees existing research on tire wear emissions as scattered, inconsistent and inconclusive.
Supported by the Tire Industry Project (TIP), the series consists of three distinct papers, each addressing a critical layer of tire wear emission knowledge. The first two published papers focus on the characterization of tire wear emissions and the assessment of their environmental impact.
Two days of development testing for Pirelli’s 2026 tires were carried out at the Hungaroring on August 5 and 6, with support from McLaren and Racing Bulls on day one and Alpine and Scuderia Ferrari the following day.
Temperatures were warm across both days, with ambient temperatures between 21°C and 31°C and track temperatures between 29°C and 56°C on day one; and air temperatures of between 21°C and 29°C and track temperatures between 31°C and 53°C on day two.
On the second day, Franco Colapinto, driving for Alpine, and Charles Leclerc, driving for Scuderia Ferrari, completed short-distance comparisons of different prototype compounds, from C3 to C5, to check their level of overall performance.

The Red Bull Driftbrothers have chosen Westlake Sport RS tires from ZC Rubber for their two 1,000hp BMW M4 drift cars.
The collaboration was officially celebrated at this year’s ADAC Ravenol 24h Nürburgring, where the Red Bull Driftbrothers performed a show drift. The high track temperatures put the Westlake Sport RS tires to the test, highlighting their performance under extreme conditions.
The partnership
ZC Rubber and the Red Bull Driftbrothers have established a long-term partnership aimed at mutual development. As part of the collaboration, ZC Rubber will supply Westlake tires to the team, using performance feedback from driver Elias Hountondji to support product development.

Bridgestone has signed an agreement to develop and supply tires for ispace‘s small and medium-size lunar rovers.
The tire maker has been developing soft, elastic lunar rover tires that can flexibly change shape in response to harsh surfaces, like those on the moon. These tires will be equipped on the lunar rover prototypes currently being developed by ispace.
Performance verification will be conducted on Earth ahead of use on the moon. Through these initiatives, both companies will assess the feasibility of the technologies and business opportunities on the lunar surface as they aim for the practical application of the tires as early as 2029.
Giti Tire has developed a prototype tire with 93% sustainable material composition. The concept uses bio-based polymer technology, advanced recycling processes, compound formulations and next-generation manufacturing techniques.
Sustainable materials
The company replaced petroleum-based ingredients with nature-derived alternatives such as sustainable natural rubber, pine resin, rice husk silica and plant-based antioxidants. These renewable alternatives make up 53% of the prototype.
Deforestation-free natural rubber sourced from rubber farms whose legality, social responsibility and environmental responsibility are traceable was used in the tire’s sidewall and inner structure. Pine tree resin, a natural alternative to petroleum resin, has been blended into the tread compound to boost grip.
GRI Tires has met and exceeded industry standards in the comprehensive field testing of its agriculture tire range by Provana Group. The tests focused on key performance metrics such as traction, fuel consumption, slippage, self-cleaning, soil compaction and rolling circumference in both lab and field settings.
“This collaboration with Provana Group has been instrumental in validating the strength and superior performance of our tires,” said Barry Guildford, global commercial director at GRI. “The findings clearly demonstrate that GRI’s agriculture tires deliver measurable advantages in the field — outperforming standard industry offerings in efficiency, durability and environmental impact.”
Provana said it was impressed with the results achieved by GRI Tires and praised the partnership, which, it said, showcased what is possible when technical precision meets manufacturing excellence.
